Swift flatbedding

So after FFE I went home and got in with Swift. It was not by any means easy. I chose to become a flatbedder because its more work and that is what I am into. I went through orientation and that was great. But then they needed my drug screen info from FFE. That was such a huge mess. You have no idea. I called them for three days and bugged them over 20 hours till they finally just gave in. I went through my tie down class and then had to ride a greyhound for 48 hours to fontana ca. To meet my trainer. Met up with her I am on the road driving every bit and doing great. Love it here couldnt be happier well until I get my own truck. I will try to update later. But to all of you FFE people who got royally screwed over by them go to swift they realize FFE is assholes. Until later.

Getting my CDL

Ok so after all the hoops I jumped through to get to Texas go through FFE and everything else. I find a way to get my cdl  on my own. This is my experience with that. So I am 3.5 hours south of Garland where I am going to be tested at. So how am I supposed to get there? Well rent a car like I did before right.

Simple enough .... you would think.
So about 3 days before hand I reserve online with Alamo everything goes through great.
The morning of I go to get my car, my sister drops me off beeps and she is gone and off with her day.
Thinking nothing of it. I wait around till my scheduled time and  then go up with a smile upon my face to get my rental car. They tell me we dont accept debit cards.

I am blown out of the water. I politely say thank you. I am ok with this a little hiccup but I am at the airport and therre is 6 other rental companies I will just get a car from one of them.

Not so easy you see its valentines day. ut oh. And either all of the cars are rented out out or I cannot get one for one of theses reasons.
1) They dont accept debit cards.
2) The cars are all rented out.
3) I did not take a plane or am taking a plane
4) I did not have at least $1000.00 in my bank
5) I am not military
6) They wouldnt recognize my T.I.P. cdl . They could not understand that I already had a license. They thought that it was a T.I.P. for a student license like out of high school.

So after all of that, I am waiting outside for my sister to come back to get me when she gets time. I start making calls and finally locate a company that will accept my debit card. But I have to wait an hour or so and I have to pay 75.00 more for this rental car because all the compacts are taken. Which means more gas. So it added $105.00 to my trip.

Ok so I make it up there, eat at my fav joint. Which is Chick Fil A
Get my room which is ok, really no complaints. Get some dinner and settle down for the night.

Next morning. 4:30 a.m.
I get up and pack all my stuff up and into my car and drive the block over to the dps to wait for my test truck guy Billy.

Everything is great its a t200 with a full sleeper with a 28 ft pup trailer.
There was 3 of us. Two guys and myself.
So we each drive about 20 mins and practice backing 1 time.

We wait and wait and wait and wait and wait. until 9:30 for out dps test person.
So she finally comes over and is ready. or so I thought
You see poor Billy' plate got stolen off the front of his truck and the examiner caught it.
SOOO....
The two guys wait and Billy' and I go to get another plate.
Well in this time.. It starts down pouring
So what does that mean. hmm our test can be canceled due to insurance we cannot drive in the rain.
So an hour later we get back. and thankfully it stop raining.
We wait another hour and do not get our female examiner.
we instead get Allen from the hangover.
He is a freaking JERK! hates his job and everyone around him.
So we go to do our air brakes test and one of us does not pass. poor guy.
So then I am the first to drive. Things did not go smoothly Allen was more of a JERK then I previously had thought. But I pass none the less.
I go in and get my license paper and come back out to watch the next guy come back with the truck.
He comes back and did not pass. So two guys one girl and I am the only one that passed. So that is my story. Hope you enjoyed. Here is Billy's website about his test truck. I recommend him to help anyone.

What did I do ( After FFE )

Ok so there was a communication barrier with an instructor and I, on my last day after graduation. Which was FFE's reason for sending me home.. Ok so now we are all caught up. But what happened next? For all of you that are wanting to know. Here it is.

AFTER FFE! No life does not end.

What did I do.
Well instead of leaving and going back to Michigan. Which is where the bus ticket would have sent me. I opted to stay in Texas.
If I would have left I would have forfeited my T.I.P and all the money I put into it. Not to mention I would have had a much harder time getting my license back in MI.
SOOO....
While in the hotel contemplating what to do my sister calls me and makes me an offer I could NOT refuse. She offered to allow me to come down 3 hours south of Ft. worth, and stay there until I decide what to do. I jumped on the offer, time to think and time too see my nephew and sister and brother in law. So she drove up and picked me up. The whole time I am beating myself up because in my mind I am a failure.

So after I got back to her place I immediately went to trying to get my cdl and get in with a company.
Which is harder than it may seem, let me tell ya.
I contacted alot of companies told them my story and they one by one rejected me. Well even though I had taken a blow. My will was not deterred. I pressed on.

Well instead of  calling more companies and getting the same let down.
I opted to get my cdl then contact companies.

Soooo. that should be easy right.?? Not so much as it may seem.

This is where I stop and add that I have a shout out to make. I spent all my money that I had painstakingly worked for on attending FFE. So what was I to do about getting money. I have to give a big thanks to my fiance and the best man in the entire world Cal. Without his everlasting belief in me I would have never made it this far. He believes in me so much he deposited enough money to aid me in my journey. I love you honey and thank you so much.

First you need to get with a company that does CDL testing. And unlike in Michigan there is NO third party testers. you see you can get tested by someone other than a dps person in Michigan. In Texas you can only be tested by a dps person.

So I needed to rent a test truck. Finally found one and after a week got it set up to use there vehicle.
So next I need to schedule a test through the dps. that should be easier right? nope wrong again.

You see unlike in Michigan getting a scheduled time for a cdl test in MUCH harder than it may seem.

Anyhow it took me 2 weeks and driving all the way ( 3hrs one way ) to the dps office to stand in line and make a appointment.

So my appt. is wens the 15th at 8 a.m. I will update as I know more. Thank you

FFE from start to finish.

Ok everyone. I am going to try to give a detailed description of what to expect when you arrive through your first week. I do not have computer access but at the school and there is a limited amount of computers. So please excuse me if I do not finish this in a timely matter.

You arrive (sun)
you will go to the hotel ffe provides. check in with the front desk and haul your stuff up to you and your roommates room. you study and try to finish all the homework that the desk clerk gives you.

your first day (mon)
you wake up at 5 a.m. tired from the bus ride. and all the changes your going through.
wait in line and try to scarf down your breakfast in time to load into the van.
get to the school apx 45 mins early stand outside in the dark. Until the school doors open.
you will go into class meet Mark an instructor and Greg who runs pretty much everything. Then you will watch the second week graduating Seniors graduate. ( very cool. and CLAP!)

you will then go over the dps texas permit and air brakes, combination vehicle test booklet. (you need to study this) then go over the huge packet you had to do before you got to class that morning

OK...

Tues:
Ditto except graduating Seniors.

Wends:
you will go through the normal morning steps.. then you will go to dps and WAIT and WAIT and WAIT!! until they call you up. you have to take 5 test and you MUST pass the TEXAS PERMIT test otherwise you will have to come back and retest the next day. Ok so you pass right?

Thurs:
You show up your classmates that were unfortunate enough not to pass everything go back and get one last shot. You since you passed go to backing range with Connie. (she is awesome by the way) ... but DONT make her RUN!

You will be doing straight line backing... really not difficult.. BUT YOU MAKE IT THAT WAY! so keep it simple and DO NOT stress. if you FREAK out over this then you WILL not be able to handle everything else that is thrown at you. TRUST ME!

Fri.:
You will start doing to the texas parallel.  LISTEN to your instructors! when in doubt STOP!!!!! do NOT run over anyone anything or another truck.

Sat:
You will continue to practice the texas parallel. Do not be surprised if some of your classmates suddenly disappear. FFE sends people home without notice.

Sun:
You will test or eval out of Texas Parallel.

 WEEK 2
Mon:
You will get assigned with a shifting instructor for the week.  He/She will teach you all they can in 4 short days. You will be on the road with an empty trailer and going through the gear pattern. You will be up shifting and downshifting. Learning how to double clutch and if you float gears they will teach you how to double shift instead.

Tues:-Thurs:
Same thing out on the road. you will do hills and get some city and interstate driving in.

Fri:
You eval for your driving and shifting. you will do a route that you will have practiced with your shifting instructor. When you complete your eval you will do pre employment app and peoplenet.

Sat:
You will be doing Alley docking again.

Sun:
You will be testing out of or evaluating  Alley docking when done you will go back to parallel.

Mon: Graduation day. You will arrive at 6:45 to the classroom and get prepared for your graduation. They do NOT make a big deal out of this. you stand around get your " participation paper" and stand outside. ok this is where it gets tricky.

You will have been trainer or at least taken through the red bird DPS route. now for those of you who are told this will be your route. DO NOT depend on that. There is another route it is lake worth. And they will change whatever they want. So ... just be prepared.

The people who are testing for redbird will go with a trainer and go test. You get 2 chances to pass the DPS test IF you get to go the red bird route. IF you get chosen to do lake worth you ONLY GET 1.

Ok so if you are a lake worth person you will go with the lake worth students and go practice your route for the next day when you test.

I cannot ad anything else to this. I graduated and then had a communication issue with the instructor whom was taking me through the lake worth route. And I got sent home. So I must warn you. When you graduate you are not out of the woods they can and will if they feel the need to send you home whenever they want.

Now let me tell you how this works.
You will get  a bus ticket home. And that nifty little certificate they gave you for all your hard work.. now means NOTHING! And if you think ohh no biggy I will just go with another company guess what.. NO you will not.  you see FFE put on my record that I "DROPPED OUT" and I did not but thats ok. Just be aware that even if you passed your DOT drug test FFE has the mentality to withold your drug screen test for up to 30 days. So even if you find a company that understands that FFE can be pricks. You will not get the job. Because witholding is pretty much as bad as failing the drug screen. Is there anything you can do about this.. umm I dont know if anyone finds an answer than please do tell.

Anyhow you may get through all of this and LOVE FFE. Great! I wish the best for you. Just dont think that  FFE set the moon because they by far did not. And always remember.....

That if you dont make it through FFE its ok and how can I say this. well simply because..
YOU CAN ONLY GO UP FROM FFE, YOU SURELY CANNOT GET ANY LOWER.\

Hope you enjoyed all of this and Keep trucking.

Love DANGER.

You WILL be provided breakfast AT 6 A.M.
if you decied to stay and WAIT for the second shuttle to come get you so you can eat. you will MOST likely be LEFT. (if there is not enough people for a second trip)
They will not come back for just one person.
Men CANNOT bunk with WOMEN.
the males WILL leave the hotel and transferr over to the schools dorms within the FIRST WEEK. if not the SECOND DAY.
There IS a HOT TUB AND POOL (outdoor)
You need to bring a LOCK for your stuff. Housekeeping does come in and clean the room. if your stuff is locked then there is no question to its safety.
ON THE WEEKENDS FOR WOMEN. DURING THE MONTH OF JAN!
